2nd August, 2017
It was a fair example of our season in Reserves – beaten by just 5 points after leading for most of the match. Bond started out like men possessed, with Vinnie Quigley darting over under the posts and then Caleb Kingi scoring from a rolling maul. UQ came back with a pick and drive try but we scored twice more to lead 26-14 at the break. Sam Wood and Rubin Fui were the tryscorers as our forwards ran roughshod over the Heavies.
But the second half was a different story, as UQ ran in three tries for 17 unanswered points. The first came from burly centre TJ Siakasini, who played for Bond last season. Down 31-26, Bond showed fighting spirit and little Max Dempsey ducked under tacklers to score. So we led 33-31.
But, with both sides dropping with exhaustion, UQ found a gap out wide and their winger raced clear to score. The final score for UQ – 38-33.
For the eighth time this season we got a bonus point for losing by less than 7 – like kissing your grandmother!
