2nd August, 2017

It looked like a mis-match on paper – first against last.  But a big win over Souths boosted our boys confidence and they started brilliantly.  Young fullback Hayden Sargent brushed off his man and raced 30m to score wide out.   The first two scrums resulted in penalties to Bond and star UQ forward Pat Morrey went off with an injury.   After sustained pressure, Mitch Third dummied his way through and scored under the posts.  (Freakishly, the conversion attempt by Harry Nucifora was charged down by speedy winger Harry Parker.)  So Bond led 10-0.

UQ then scored 26 unanswered points after we lost Reds hooker Alex Mafi to a dislocated finger.  Whilst Bond had been the enforcer in the early scrums, the situation changed and at one stage UQ called for 5 scrums in a row.  Flanker Joel Brown got ten minutes in the bin for a professional foul on the line.  It was 21-10 at the break.

When UQ scored right after halftime it looked ominous.  But Bond showed stubborn resistance and, indeed were only outscored 24-19 in the second half.

Big Zac Moi Moi finished off a rolling maul for the first try, young Josh Walker was on the end of the backline to score the second and finally Fred Keil broke through the centres for the third.  To score 5 tries against the competition leaders was impressive and the efforts of the younger players augurs well for next season.
