25th July, 2017
It was Vitori Buatava’s 150th game* and he led the Reserves onto the field, with high hopes of a win to celebrate the milestone. But at halftime it looked unlikely as Souths led 17-0 after scoring 3 tries.
In the second half though our boys rallied and came back with two tries. Rubin Fui barged over from a concerted pick and drive attack and then halfback Vinnie Quigley scored under the posts to make it 17-14. Significantly, it was Vitori who sparked the second try with a “goose-step” and flick pass to Struan Robertson down the right wing. Struan raced 10m and drew the fullback, passing inside to Vinnie backing up at full tilt.
Sadly though, Souths closed out the match with 2 more tries to win 29-14.
*Congratulations to Vitori who’s been a great role model for the club. At 32, he’s announced that this will be his final season. He played flyhalf in his debut season in the club’s Brisbane premiership in 2004 and over the next 14 seasons played 16 Tests for Fiji, including the 2011 World Cup. Considering that he also played Super Rugby for the Western Force and had 2 seasons with Sydney Easts, his tally of games would be well over 200. “The Mouth” will be sorely missed.
