Against the competition leaders our young side performed well, scoring two tries but were badly beaten in two key areas – the breakdown and the lineout. This Brothers side is well-coached and skilful and we did well to hold them to 14-7 at halftime, especially as the penalty count was 8-1 against us. Bevan Reynolds scored a neat try after a patient buildup and a clever switch of play by fullback Callum Elliott. Sadly the talented Callum, who missed last season after an ACL operation, hurt his hamstring and had to go off.
Brothers best player, fullback Jordan Rogers, scored 2 tries and had a hand in their other three. So why did we kick to him time and again? Brothers contested every breakdown and won a lot of turnovers, so our boys did gallantly to limit them to 5 tries.
One bright note was the return of clever back, Bryce Catchpole (grandson of the great Wallaby halfback) who scored a try after a nice kick and chase by Jack Giles and hard-working Kyle Cullen.
Colts 1 are still in 5th place on the table, just 3 points out of the top four, so the remaining four matches will be vital in their drive towards the finals.
