CLOSE LOSS FOR REGGIES

12th June, 2017

It was the only match played by Bond Rugby Club in Round 12 and it was one we expected to win.   In Premier Reserves, Logan had won only one match all season and our boys had hit a recent purple patch of form.  We needed to win every game from here in to have any chance of making the finals.   But somehow we contrived to lose 22-17.

On paper we had a strong team, with experienced Cam Bracewell, Rubin Fui and Will Slipper back in the pack.   Mind you, Logan had a massive pack and played to their strengths, bashing it up the middle before unleashing their backs.

Bond made a slow start and were down 12-0 after 20 minutes.   Clever flyhalf Michael Marshall made the only real break for Bond, weaving his way over 50m, only to offload to Struan Robertson who couldn’t hold the pass.

Just before halftime though, we finally worked our way inside their quarter and big, bearded Zac Moi Moi crashed over for a try.  12-5 at the break.

The pep-talk seemed to do the trick and little halfback Max Dempsey scored on the short side after a barrage of forward attacks.  12-10.

Our lineout throwing was terrible and, from one that went over the back,  Logan’s big pack rumbled upfield and their hooker went over to make it 19-10, with 10 minutes left.

Our boys had the momentum now and Moi Moi, who was having a blinder, went in for his second try to narrow the gap to just 2 points, 19-17 with 5 minutes left.

Lack of discipline has been a problem and, of all things, we were ruled offside at the re-start!    Then we gave away 2 silly penalties, presenting Logan with the ball, and they scored the clincher to make it 22-17.

There was still time to snatch a draw though and our boys showed skill and discipline to maintain possession after the siren, working into their quarter over about 15 phases.  But sadly, just 5m from the line, Cliff Otswald had the ball jolted out of his hands and it was all over.  Logan won 22-17, only their second win this season.
