It’s been a frustrating season for Jed Hogan’s Reserve Grade. Time and again, they’ve lost close games by just a few points. But against UQ they put it all together for just their second win of the season. With Will Slipper back in the scrum, swapping with big Brandon Anae alongside Ben Hunt and Fred Fiala, Bond ruled up front. Cliff Otswald and Callum Ball were terrific in the lineout and our first try came after a good drive off a lineout, touched down by Jaye Paton. Justin Bernstein converted to give Bond a 7-5 lead.
UQ had a forward sin-binned for a high tackle and they resorted to long passes. Lively winger Nate Corbett read one perfectly and intercepted on his own 22m line, racing 80m to score. So we led 14-5 at half-time.
It soon became 21-5 after the break as Bond scored from a pushover from a 5m scrum – Jaye Paton bagging his second try. Then perennial try-scorer, Ben Hunt finished off a sweeping 70m move started by replacement Zac Moi Moi and carried on by P.J. Van Den Berg.
Stiff defence was one of the keys to this effort and Struan Robertson made the hit of the day on his opponent late in the game.
UQ got a consolation try in the corner right on the siren to deprive us of a bonus point but the final score read – Bond 28 UQ 12. The team song never sounded better and the boys continued the celebrations in the dressing rooms.
