With Will Slipper back in the front row, our Reserve Grade pack was transformed for the game against Easts. Bond had a dominant scrum and, for the first time in memory, we scored from a magnificent pushover try. However it was not enough and a patchy performance from Bond saw the Tigers win 46-28.
Easts led 7-0 after a runaway try by former Premier Grade fullback Eliot Hagen but Bond levelled the scores with a spectacular try. It was scored by winger Zac Hargraves but put it down to centre Exe Oliveri – with an offload worthy of Sonny Bill Williams!
Such fine play was marred by a sloppy mistake – Callum McDonald flipped a ball off the ground, to be intercepted by Easts centre and they scored under the posts. With a scrum penalty Easts led 17-7.
Big Zac Moi Moi was over the line but ruled “held up.” So we had a 5m scrum with our feed. Assistant coach Mick Hall yelled from the sideline “pushover.” Bond shoved Easts back over their line and number 8, Sam Wood touched down for a classic forwards try. 17-14.
Once again however, we took the foot off the pedal and Easts went to a lead of 27-17. It seemed we were gone, but then came the try of the match.
We won clean ball and quick hands saw Exe Oliveri make a half break through the centres then, evoking memories of Campo and Horan ’91 World Cup, he flipped a no-look pass over his shoulder to Rian Olivier who scored. 27-21.
But Easts lively halfback Charlie Olsen wrapped up the match single-handed – darting down the blindside for a try, scoring another under the posts and getting his hat-trick on fulltime, as well as converting two tries. In the meantime, young Bond centre Struan Robertson scored a fine individual try but it was too little too late. Easts winners by 46-28.
