After starting the season on a good note with a win over Norths and a draw against Brothers, Bond University’s Premier Grade team has slumped to three defeats in succession. On a windy day at Robina Easts made fewer mistakes and used the full width of the field to score 3 tries to 2.
Bond started badly when a loose pass was intercepted and Easts backs combined well for right winger David Yabsley to score untouched.
Adam Higgins made a try-saving tackle on Yabsley when he seemed certain to score again but, from the ensuing ruck, lock Max Allen crashed over. It was 12-nil at halftime.
Running into a stiff breeze it seemed Bond would have their work cut out but, almost immediately, they scored. Rubin Fuimaono came off the bench and used his power to drive over the line, after slick work inside by Joel Brown and Caderyn Neville. Mitch Third converted to make it 12-7 and Bond supporters’ hopes were high.
But Easts used the wind cleverly to gain field position and then outflanked the Bond backline for Yabsley to cross for his second try. That made it 20-7.
Bond came back again with a try from a perfectly-executed driving maul off a lineout, scored by Ben Hunt. It was 20-14.
Easts halfback replacement Charlie Olsen kicked a penalty and then converted Yabsley’s third try from the touchline for Easts to run out winners 30-14. So Easts won the Batty-Bremner-Thomas Trophy (for annual competition between the two clubs, donated by 3 club stalwarts Grant Batty, John Bremner and Mike Thomas.
One bright note for Bond was the improvement in our set piece, holding our own in scrums and lineouts.
