RESERVES GOOD START BUT POOR FINISH

24th April, 2017

Our Reggies made a terrific start, dominating territory and possession.  Justin Bernstein landed a 42m penalty to open the scoring but then missed one from right in front from 30m.  Time and again, our boys had chances to score but couldn’t finish off with a try.  Predictably, Sunnybank scored against the run of play.  Their veteran centre Rex Tapuai ran off a brilliant one-handed off-load by former Australian Schools flyhalf Fred Dorrough to score.   Tapuai got his second moments later, sprinting away untouched over 40m and it was 14-3 at halftime.

The second half was a depressing repetition of the first.  When our scrum collapsed near our line the referee awarded the Dragons a penalty try and even the introduction of 4 fresh players had no effect.  With de-powered scrums because we had run out of props, Sunnybank dominated the final stages, running in their 4th try down the right wing to make the final score 28-3.
