With Liam Upfield and Ryan Briggs back from Premier Colts, Bond fielded its strongest team and it paid dividends. They scored 8 tries in demolishing Souths by 44-12. The only flaw was that they dropped their bundle at the end, allowing Souths in for two soft tries.
Nathan McPherson started the slaughter, scoring after a classic backline move when he backed up inside his winger. Riley Wilson, Liam Upfield and Austen Northey also scored and it was 24-nil at halftime.
Ryan Briggs scored a fantastic individual try after the break, racing 50m and beating two defenders before sprinting away. Austen Northey was having a blinder – unselfishly drawing the fullback and sending his winger Luca Lewis over. Keahn Tipu scored twice to make it 44-nil before a late Souths rally. But it was a devastating performance – a bonus point and some terrific team tries. It was hard to pick best players but Austen Northey, Riley Wilson, Liam Upfield and Ryan Briggs shone in the forwards and Mitch Currie and Angus Roberts caught the eye in the backs.
Coach Damian Cahill is hard to please but, after the game, he summed it up with a big smile.
“Our best effort of the year so far. We’re finally starting to understand our structure and stick to the game plan.”
