Tom McKee’s team of youngsters showed remarkable maturity to hold out a strong finish by Jeeps and win 19-17. Bond started well, with big Austin Lieder scoring, after a series of forward drives. Jeeps hit back with a try by their prop Joe Ryan and then another by centre James Taylor. Down 10-7, Bond scored twice more to go to the break leading 19-10. Centre Jackson Neale finished off a neat passing move and then speedy halfback Josh Vuta scored a spectacular try – diving over under the posts. Finally playing his natural position, the former Australian Schools halfback is playing the house down.
Jeeps came back strongly, narrowing the margin to just 2 points but, to their credit, our boys held them out with desperate defence. A win and a draw to start the season. This side has plenty of talent and character and next week’s game against Brothers should be a beauty.
