It must have been the quickest try of the season. Big Bond centre Samuela Hermana sliced through some tentative defence for the first try after just 30 seconds. Justin Bernstein made it 7-0 and Bond fans were rubbing their hands in anticipation.
But a few minutes later Jeeps centre Steve Stagg ran a brilliant line to cut through and score under the posts and suddenly it was 7-all.
Energetic flanker Jamison Quirk charged down a clearing kick, got a favourable bounce and sprinted away for our second try to grab a 12-7 lead. But Jeeps hit back with a converted try and penalty to lead 17-12 at the break.
The lead see-sawed throughout the second half too, with Bond winger Harry Jurgs finishing off a terrific team move to score in the corner and JB converting from the sideline. 19-17 to Bond.
Jeeps fullback, Jono Kent, then took hold of the game with two brilliant runs. The first saw him break down the blind-side, draw our fullback and put their No 8, Nick Richards in. 22-19 to GPS. And finally he broke through again and sent winger Isaac Weier over for the clincher. Final score – GPS 27 Bond 19.
To make matters worse, club captain Nick Turner had to be helped from the field with an ankle injury. Two narrow losses to start the season – let’s hope the boys can turn the corner next week against Brothers.
