BURC host the Souths Magpies in Week 2 of the Premier Grade competition, with both sides coming off first round losses. Bond staged a second half comeback to almost snatch victory against UQ at St Lucia, 21-18, while Souths did something similar against Sunnybank, conceding four tries in the first half and scoring three themselves in the second, losing 28-19.
The similarity doesn’t end there. Like Bond, Souths have a new-look coaching staff, with Head Coach Brett Picone, forwards coach Van Humphries and backs coach Elia Tuqiri. Picone was assistant coach to Shane Arnold at GPS for the past few years and is highly regarded, while Humphries and Tuqiri were both outstanding players before retiring.
It’s an important match for both teams, so a good crowd is assured. BURC Club Captain Cam Bracewell expects a hard game, but says there’s been a real buzz around the team this week.
“We’re pretty excited about this game. After running so close to the Premiers last week, we know we are a good side. There were plenty of nerves last week and now we’ve got the cobwebs out of our system, we’re ready for a big one. We learnt a few lessons against Uni, especially in our set piece, so we’ve put extra effort into our scrum and lineout at training.”
Nicky Turner comes into hooker in place of Tazzy Jones and Vitori Buatava replaces the injured Dion Taumata at flyhalf and first-choice goal-kicker. Vitori played almost two full games last week, as Dion was taken off early with a head knock. It was a credit to him that he directed play so well and played a hand in each of Jamie Evans’ two tries. With a couple of Tests for Fiji to his name, Vitori’s an experienced player who will play a key role against the Magpies.
Premier Reserves are on top of the table after their huge win over UQ and will be favoured to beat Souths, who lost 29-12 to Sunnybank.
BURC Colts were outplayed by UQ last week but should perform better against Souths, who lost to Sunnybank 55-0 in Premier Colts and 89-0 in Colts 1. Good luck to all Bond players – let’s turn it on for the home crowd. But as Cam Bracewell says:
“Going close is not good enough – nothing less than a win will do.”
