With the departure of Brad Harris overseas, BURC Premier Colts have found another first-class coach. Brad did a fabulous job last season, taking our Colts to the Grand Final, which they lost narrowly to Sunnybank. But, if anyone is capable of doing even better, it’s Geoff Townsend.
After playing Rugby League at school, 18 year old Geoff joined the old Port Hacking Rugby Club, later known as Southern Districts. He then got the coaching bug, starting with Port Hacking. He then went overseas for a couple of years with Kobe Steel in Japan, and came back to coach Southern Districts, NSW U19s and Manly.
Then came 4 years at Super Rugby level with former All Black John Mitchell at the Western Force. In 2011 he moved to Sydney where he started something different – a book on Rugby. Part fact, part fiction, all about an overseas tour, it’s a must-read for Rugby fans. To give you an idea – at the first training session the tourists discovered they’d forgotten to bring a Rugby ball!
Moving to the Gold Coast from Sydney, where he was coaching Gordon, Geoff is a veteran of 15 years professional coaching. He and Sean Hedger go back to the early 90s, when Sean had Country U19s and Geoff was in charge of NSW U19s. They met again in the 2014 NRC, when Sean was with Melbourne Rising and Geoff was with Sydney Rays.
Finally settling on the Coast, Geoff will team up with experienced co-coaches Ray Smith and Roscoe Deacon, and with ”manager extraordinaire”, Jim Currie. We wish him the best of luck.
