Sunnybank got off to a blazing start, with their left winger Motoricocoka scoring the first try after they dominated the opening minutes. The tall, speedy “Moto” got a hattrick in the first round clash, which Bond won 40-37. Things got worse for us when brilliant fullback Callum Elliot limped off with a knee injury and, when Sunnybank scored twice more to lead 17-0, it looked all over.
But the spirit and fitness of this Colts team got them back into the game. First Jack Leavy barged over after sustained Bond attacks and Liam Longbottom, on as a replacement, landed the conversion from wide out.
Lineout star Cliff Otswald went off with a shoulder injury and Bond struggled in the set piece. But bustling play by our pack led to a second try, scored by clever finisher Exe Olivieri and it was 17-12.
Hampered by a series of questionable refereeing decisions, Bond found it hard to maintain continuity. Although finishing all over their opponents, it was too late and the fulltime whistle sounded. The loss didn’t do much damage though, as Bond are still in the top 2 on the table. It was only their second loss in 11 games but they’ll have to play better if they want to stay there.
