With 2nd playing 9th, it was expected that Bond would have no trouble beating Norths. But, for the first 15 minutes, it looked like an upset was on the cards. The Eagles youngsters camped in Bond’s quarter, launching wave after wave of attacks, but couldn’t score. Finally though, Norths tired, we got some ball and big Drew Martin crashed over, with Nick Sanguinetti converting to make it 7-0.
A few minutes later flyhalf Tyler Gillott put big Billy Jeffress into a gap and he raced over. 12-0. Then Gillott worked the blind and put winger Herekiah Tamatea into a gap. He stepped, stretched and scored. 17-0.
The bonus point came up when busy Ryan Briggs bustled his way over for the 4th try before halftime. Nick converted and it was 24-0.
The second half was one-way traffic, as the Bond boys kept the foot on the throat in a ruthless performance. They scored another 9 tries in a brilliant display, showing terrific teamwork and confidence. The 2 “Argies” – Exe Olivieri and Sanguinetti – each scored twice, as did Jeffress and Tamatea. The rest were shared around, with one each to Eli Taulilei, Zac Hargraves, Kyle Cullen and Aaron Aitken. Nick Sanguinetti kicked 8 goals for a tally of 26 points.
Previously unbeaten Brothers were defeated 31-18 by UQ, which means our team is now equal first. The match of the season comes up next week when we take on UQ at St Lucia.
