Bond University Rugby Club

5th March, 2015

Over 200 players, sponsors and supporters packed Don’s Tavern for the launch of the 2015 Rugby Season.  Among the throng were former Wallabies, Greg Cornelson, Ross Reynolds and Garrick Morgan.  It was a joyous occasion, but there was a tinge of sadness too.  Vice-Chancellor Prof. Tim Brailsford announced that Club President, Tom Ray was standing down after six years of unselfish leadership.  Tom runs the popular Salt resort at Kingscliff and his wife, Megan recently gave birth to their third child, so something had to give.   Sadly for Tom, he leaves the club on the brink of an exciting new era.

The new President, Manny Pohl introduced himself in a brief and modest speech.  South African by birth, he’s now a successful businessman and proud Queenslander, who just happens to be a “Rugby tragic.”

The Premier Grade team for the first round encounter with University of Queensland was announced and the V-C handed the players their jerseys.  New Head Coach, Sean Hedger declared that his team was ready to cause an upset this weekend, but refused to buy into predictions about the team’s prospects this season.

“We have already made significant achievements in that we have defined the club’s 5 basic values and, if we stick to them, success will follow.  I have been involved with both amateur and professional Rugby clubs, but I’ve never seen a better setup than here at Bond.  The facilities are second to none.”

One feature of the club’s leadership group is the diversity of the player’s backgrounds – Club Captain Cam Bracewell is a Kiwi, Josh Fuiamono has Tongan heritage, Cal Masson and PJ Van Den Berg are from South Africa and Ryan Newton is Queensland-born and bred.   Our players are from all over the world – we even have a Frenchman and a Belgian – but they’re united by a common purpose and a love of the game.

The coaching staff have done a wonderful job in the pre-season, getting the players fit and moulding them into four teams – two senior and 2 Colts.  All the hard work will be put to the test on Saturday at St Lucia and we invite as many supporters as possible to make the trip to Brisbane and cheer the boys on.
