ANOTHER WIN TO PREMIER COLTS
Premier Colts triumph in a seesawing battle that wasn’t decided until the last minute of play.
Previously unbeaten, Sunnybank scored first when their centre broke through out wide and it was 5-0. But clever hooker Isaiah Wildermuth capitalized on a slashing break by big centre Dylan Riley to level the scores and Hamish Stewart converted to give Bond a 7-5 lead.
The Dragons’ big number 8 is a powerful runner. He took off in midfield and beat two tackles to score – it was 12-7. And moments later they scored again, with a good team try under the posts. At 19-7 down it looked like our boys’ unbeaten run would come to an end.
But the fitness and spirit of this team is remarkable. A rolling maul saw South African Nick “Jannie” Luyt go over, Hamish converted and at halftime the margin was only 5 points.
Right after the break Bond gave away a penalty – one of many breakdown infringements – and they led 22-14. But our pack worked hard and gave Zac Newton good ball, his pass gave Hamish a fraction of extra time and he put Dylan Riley into a half-gap. The strong centre raced through and carried two tacklers over the line. Hamish Stewart converted again and Sunnybank’s lead was only 1 point, 22-21.
It looked like the Dragons had knocked on but the referee didn’t agree and, while our team hung back, Sunnybank scored again. At 27-21 down it looked hopeless. But someone forgot to tell out boys. Superior fitness and determination saw Bond work their way towards the line with a series of pick and drives and Ben “Tower” Grant dived over. But we still trailed by 1, down 27-26.
With nerves of steel, Hamish steered the conversion between the posts and the final score read – Bond 28 Sunnybank 27. With the 4 try bonus point Bond are on top of the table with Brothers.
Congratulations to the whole team, but a special pat on the back to Hamish Stewart who kicked every goal, which was the difference in the end.
