Bond University Rugby Club

8th April, 2016

After a topsy-turvy start to the season Bond University’s Premier Grade team has made sweeping changes for Saturday’s Round 4 match against Sunnybank.   Both teams have had 2 losses in the first 3 rounds, but the Dragons have 3 bonus points, which places them 5th on the table.

Bond made a promising start to the season with some good trial form and a rousing 31-10 win over Easts, the 2015 minor premiers.   But the wheels came off in the next 2 games, losing to Norths 35-23 and then to UQ last weekend 33-15.

Head Coach Sean Hedger has made 5 changes to the run-on side from last week.  Hooker Ben Hunt replaces Nick Turner, who goes to the bench.  In the back row, Ruaridh McKenzie replaces Jake Upfield and Callum McDonald is in for Jaye Paton.  At halfback, Vitori Buatava forces Luke Evans to the bench and Gus Qasevakatini is on the wing in place of Lachy Duncan.

Bond are searching to find their early season form after playing superbly to beat Easts, with the feature long, accurate passing in the backline.   But, in the past 2 games, the backs have looked disjointed and will be trying different things to find their form.

While physical fitness and skills are important, the mental side of the game is the key. If you saw the recent Super Rugby clash between the Chiefs and the Brumbies, you would know what I mean.  While the Brumbies just went through the motions, the Chiefs had urgency, enthusiasm and speed in everything they did.  They even smiled!   And they crushed Australia’s top side, scoring 6 tries, to head the rankings.

Our Colts team have shown the way this season, revelling in their fitness from a hard pre-season, great team spirit and excellent coaching.   Both teams are on top of the table, undefeated.  If our senior teams can take a leaf out of the Colts book they can turn it around on Saturday at Oldmac Oval.
